If you have decided to get support for your mental health, you immediately face a confusing menu: therapist, counsellor, clinical psychologist, psychiatrist. Who does what — and who should you see? Here is the plain-English version for Malaysia.
The short answer
“Therapist” is an umbrella term for anyone who provides talk therapy — it is not a protected title by itself. Counsellors in Malaysia are registered with Lembaga Kaunselor (Board of Counsellors) and typically help with life stress, relationships, grief and adjustment. Clinical psychologists hold postgraduate clinical training and are qualified to conduct psychological assessments (ADHD, ASD, IQ, personality) as well as therapy for more complex conditions. Psychiatrists are medical doctors — they can prescribe medication; psychologists and counsellors cannot.
Who should you see first?
- Everyday stress, relationship strain, low mood, grief → a counsellor or clinical psychologist
- Suspected ADHD, autism, learning difficulties, or you need a formal report → a clinical psychologist (assessment)
- Severe symptoms — psychosis, mania, or you think medication may help → a psychiatrist, often alongside therapy
- Not sure? → start with either a counsellor or psychologist; a good one will refer you onward if needed. Or take our free mental health self-check for gentle guidance first.
How much does it cost in Malaysia?
Private counselling and psychotherapy in the Klang Valley typically ranges from around RM150 to RM400 per session. At BeLive in Psychology, a first individual consultation is RM180 (30 minutes) or RM290 (75 minutes), with subsequent sessions at RM230 — see our full transparent pricing, including couples therapy and psychological assessments.
The credentials to look for
In Malaysia, check that a counsellor is registered with Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia (KB, PA numbers) and that a clinical psychologist holds a recognised Master’s or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. You can always ask — ethical practitioners are happy to share their credentials. Meet our team and their qualifications.
